RoHS stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances”, as defined by the European Union Directive # 2002/95/EC. The ROHS Directive was developed to protect human health and the environment. Since July 1, 2006, lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls or polybrominated diphenyl ethers have been banned by this directive from new electrical and electronic equipment in the European Union.  A similar law is now in effect in California and other states are considering related measures to protect the environment from these hazardous substances.
